Locker room and gym hygiene: the plan that eliminates odours and fungi
Humidity, sweat and barefoot traffic make locker rooms and gyms the most critical point of any sports facility. Here is the professional cleaning plan with dilutions and frequencies.
Why locker rooms and gyms are a special case
Three factors combine: constant humidity, organic load (sweat, skin, hair) and barefoot people. It is the ideal environment for athlete's foot, bacteria and persistent odours. The real problem is not visible dirt: it is the invisible biofilm that forms within hours on tiles, benches and floors.
Cleaning 'when you see dirt' is already too late: you need a plan with the right products and fixed frequencies.
The daily plan in 3 zones
ZONE 1 — Floors and showers: daily washing after closing time with a neutral hygienic detergent like Painet at 1–2%. The low-foam formula leaves no slippery residue and is barefoot-safe. ZONE 2 — Benches, lockers and touch surfaces: alcohol-based hygienic detergent like Sanid, sprayed on a cloth and wiped over all touched surfaces, several times a day at peak hours. ZONE 3 — Toilets: daily with a specific product, with attention to taps and handles.
Once a week: deep floor cleaning with a single-disc machine and Painet at 3–5%, focusing on grout lines and corners where biofilm nests.
Persistent odours: the cause nobody looks at
If the locker room 'smells like a locker room' even right after cleaning, the cause is almost always in the shower drains and floor grout: that is where the odour-producing biofilm lives. Fragrance masks, it doesn't solve. Weekly drain treatment and mechanical grout cleaning are needed, not more air freshener.
Lockers should also be left open at the end of the day: circulating air halves mould and stale-odour formation.
Safety for those who train (and those who clean)
Wet floors with foamy detergent are slippery: Painet is formulated low-foam precisely for this. Wet-floor signs during washing, and never leave open bottles within customers' reach. Lüster technical and safety datasheets can be downloaded in 4 languages from every product page: print them and attach them to the cleaning plan.
FAQ
How often should locker room benches be sanitised?
In busy facilities at least 2–3 times a day at peak hours with a fast alcohol-based detergent (Sanid), in addition to the full evening clean. Touch surfaces are the primary vector for fungi and bacteria between people.
Can Painet be used in a scrubber dryer?
Yes: the low-foam formula is compatible with professional scrubber dryers. For medium-sized locker rooms a compact scrubber dryer halves the time compared to mopping and leaves the floor immediately dry and walkable.
How do I permanently remove bad odours from shower drains?
Pour a specific treatment into drains weekly, remove and wash the trap covers (where biofilm accumulates) and keep up daily floor washing. The odour disappears when the biofilm disappears — not when you add fragrance.
