Scrubber dryer battery: the maintenance that doubles its life
The battery is the most expensive component of a battery-powered scrubber dryer: with 5 charging and care rules it lasts twice as long. Here is what to do daily, weekly and monthly.
Why batteries die before their time
From our IPC service experience, eight out of ten batteries fail because of poor maintenance, not defects. The three main causes: repeated deep discharges (running the battery to zero), partial charges interrupted halfway, and corroded terminals that falsify the charge.
A well-maintained battery delivers 800–1,000 cycles; a neglected one manages 300. On a machine used daily, that is the difference between replacing it after 4 years or after 1 year.
The 5 daily charging rules
1) Recharge when the battery drops to 20–30%, never below. 2) Let the full cycle finish: unplugging the charger at half charge shortens plate life. 3) Charge in a ventilated room, away from heat sources: the battery produces hydrogen while charging. 4) After a full charge wait 30 minutes before using the machine. 5) Always use the original charger or a compatible one with the correct charging curve: a wrong charger 'cooks' the battery in a few months.
IPC scrubber dryers with lithium batteries follow more relaxed rules (partial charges allowed), but even there deep discharge remains the enemy.
Weekly and monthly maintenance
Every week: clean terminals and battery cover of dust and acid residue (damp cloth, battery off), check that cables are not pinched or frayed. Every month, on flooded lead-acid batteries: check the electrolyte level and top up only with demineralised water, with the battery charged. Never tap water: Swiss minerals destroy the plates.
Log top-ups on a register by the charging station: a battery that 'drinks' too much is starting to degrade — plan its replacement before it lets you down mid-shift.
Downtime and winter storage
If the scrubber dryer is idle for more than two weeks: charge the battery to 100%, disconnect the negative terminal and recharge once a month. A battery left flat for weeks sulfates and never recovers. In winter, in an unheated room, remember that below 5 °C output drops and charging slows down.
For doubts about battery condition or for replacement, the 4F Services support team covers all IPC machines in Ticino and Switzerland: photograph your machine's rating plate with our online scanner and we will immediately tell you which battery is the right one.
FAQ
Can I leave the scrubber dryer always connected to the charger?
With modern maintenance chargers, yes: once charging is complete they switch to buffer mode. With old chargers without maintenance mode, no: overcharging overheats the plates. When in doubt, unplug once fully charged.
Lead-acid, AGM or lithium — which is better?
Lead-acid: cheap but needs topping up and full charges. AGM: maintenance-free for fluids, more expensive. Lithium: free partial charging, lower weight and longer life, but higher upfront cost. For intensive daily use we recommend lithium or AGM.
How do I know the battery needs replacing?
Three signals: runtime dropped below 60% of normal, much shorter charging times (a sign of low residual capacity) and abnormal water consumption at top-ups. With a controlled discharge test we measure real capacity in 30 minutes.
